Cooking from scratch doesn’t have to mean complicated recipes, long ingredient lists, or spending all day in the kitchen.
For me, it starts in the pantry.
Over the years, I’ve learned that when my pantry is stocked with a few simple basics, I can make real meals without stress — even on busy nights. No constant grocery trips. No boxed mixes. Just simple ingredients that work hard.
This is the foundation of how I cook from scratch in real life.
⸻
What “From-Scratch Pantry Cooking” Really Means
Cooking from scratch isn’t about doing everything the hard way.
It’s about understanding a few basic ingredients and using them in different ways.
The same staples can become:
• Biscuits
• Pancakes
• Dumplings
• Gravy
• Simple desserts
• Comfort-food dinners
Once you learn those basics, cooking feels calmer and more flexible.
⸻
The Pantry Staples I Always Keep on Hand
These are the core ingredients I rely on week after week. They’re simple, affordable, and endlessly useful.
Flour
All-purpose flour is the backbone of so many from-scratch recipes. From biscuits to gravies, it’s one ingredient I never run out of.
Sugar
Granulated sugar and brown sugar cover most everyday needs — from baking to simple sauces.
Salt
A basic pantry staple that brings everything together. It’s essential for both savory and sweet cooking.
Baking Powder
This is what allows quick breads, biscuits, and pancakes to rise without yeast.
Fats (Butter, Oil, or Lard)
Fat adds flavor and texture. I keep what works for my kitchen and use it across many recipes.
Cornmeal
Simple, inexpensive, and perfect for breads, coatings, and classic comfort foods.
Spices & Seasonings
A small collection of basic seasonings goes a long way:
• Black pepper
• Paprika
• Garlic powder
• Onion powder
• Poultry seasoning
You don’t need dozens of jars — just the ones you actually use.
⸻
Why Pantry Basics Matter More Than Recipes
Recipes come and go.
Pantry knowledge sticks.
When you understand how your pantry works, you’re no longer stuck following a recipe exactly. You can adapt, substitute, and make meals with what you already have.
That’s where confidence in the kitchen comes from.
⸻
How This Approach Saves Time and Money
Cooking from pantry basics means:
• Fewer grocery trips
• Less food waste
• No last-minute dinner panic
• More flexibility
It also means you’re not dependent on store-bought mixes that cost more and do less.
⸻
Start Simple — You Don’t Need Everything at Once
If you’re new to cooking from scratch, don’t try to overhaul your pantry overnight.
Start with:
• Flour
• Sugar
• Salt
• Baking powder
Those four alone can replace many boxed mixes.
Add more as you go. Build slowly. Make it work for your home.

I love seeing a young person teaching basics that are healthier, cheaper, and not time intensive. I’ve made my own seasonings and mixes for years (decades, but I’m old.😁) and now it’s fashionable. I’m in fashion! Imagine!

I truly enjoy your posts and your recipes are what I remember growing up with. My mother was the cook in our family and she made everything from scratch. She had the recipes in her head and made from feel. Unfortunately she never wrote anything down and she has now passed.
I love that you grew up with it! My Granny did a lot of it by heart too- a few of us have some of her recipes- but many she carried in her heart and hands.
Thank you for this. I have a completely stocked pantry, I cook from scratch but just have never thought of making things like gravies ahead & storing them.
I am so happy that these recipes can help! It definitely cuts down on time and money 🙂
Over the past 2 years, I have been learning how to make and use mixes from my pantry. I am celiac, so I adapt all the recipes to ingredients I can use. I now keep 2-3 jars of my brownie mix so I can fix quickly if my granddaughters are visiting, I keep chicken, beef and country gravy mixes, biscuit mix, muffin mix, mug cake mix, cake mixes, meatloaf spices, taco spices, poultry spices. I am so glad you are sharing your recipes and information. You are helping a lot of people.
I am so thankful that the recipes can help in some way! <3 thank you for your kind comment!
