Sweet Harvest| Turning Brotherly Love into Delicious Homemade Apple Preserves

As I stood in my kitchen, surrounded by the bounty of my brother’s generosity. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude and excitement. The basket of fresh apples he had given me from his own trees was a treasure trove of possibilities, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them: make homemade apple preserves.

Growing up in the country we lived on a small acre that connected to my great grandparents 100 acre farm. We were surrounded by nature and all it had to offer. My Uncle grew a huge garden for my great grandmother and I remember going over and helping with the harvest of the potatoes. We spent countless hours playing outside and watching the seasons change.

Fast forward to today, and my Husband and I have our own 19 acre farm with our own gardens and fruit trees. While it isn’t producing large quantities yet, it is a labor of love that we are nurturing with care and patience.

Back to the apples- the aroma of freshly cored, sliced and seasoned apples was wafting through my kitchen and I set to work cooking and canning. I used all smaller green apples to make up this batch of homemade apple preserves.

As I simmered the apples in a pot of sugar, a little water, and lemon juice, the flavors melded together in a beautiful harmony. The kitchen was filling with the comforting scent of slow-cooked fruit, transporting me back to my childhood standing on the family farm on a crisp autumn morning. I could almost hear the sound of the leaves crunching beneath my feet and the rustle of the wind through the trees.

After 30 minutes or so of gentle simmering, the preserves had reached the perfect consistency- thick, syrupy, and irresistibly delicious. I ladled the golden mixture into sterilized jars, feeling a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. These preserves were not only a testament to my brother’s generosity but also a lovely reminder of my childhood.

As I sealed the jars and labeled them with love, I couldn’t help but think of all the ways my family would enjoy these preserves in the months to come. Slathered on a freshly baked biscuit, or used as a topping for ice cream, mixed into a warm apple pie- the possibilities were endless.

This batch of homemade apple preserves is more than just a tasty treat; it is a symbol of love and connection that runs deep in our family. From the early roots of our farm to the warmth of my kitchen, these preserves represent the joy of sharing, the beauty of tradition, and the simple pleasures of homemade goodness.
