Homemade brown gravy mix made from pantry ingredients in a glass jar

Homemade Brown Gravy Mix

This recipe makes a dry gravy mix that you can scoop and use whenever needed.

Ingredients
    •    1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
    •    3 tablespoons beef bouillon
    •    2 tablespoons cornstarch
    •    1 tablespoon onion powder
    •    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    •    1 teaspoon black pepper

(If your bouillon is salty, no additional salt is needed.)

How to Make the Dry Mix
    1.    Add all dry ingredients to a pint-size jar with an airtight lid.
    2.    Shake well or sift together until evenly combined.
    3.    Label and store in a cool, dry pantry.

That’s it — once it’s mixed, it’s ready whenever you need it.

How to Make Brown Gravy from the Mix

When you’re ready to cook:
    1.    Melt 2 tablespoons butter, lard, or pan drippings in a saucepan over medium heat.
    2.    Whisk in 2 tablespoons of the brown gravy mix.
    3.    Slowly whisk in 1 cup beef broth or water.
    4.    Simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until thickened.

Use immediately or keep warm until serving.

How I Use This Gravy Mix

This mix works anywhere you’d normally use brown gravy, including:
    •    Meatloaf and Salisbury steak
    •    Mashed potatoes
    •    Roast beef or pot roast
    •    Skillet meals and one-pan dinners
    •    Open-faced sandwiches

If a recipe calls for a gravy packet, this works just the same.

Storage Tips
    •    Store in an airtight jar
    •    Keep in a cool, dry pantry
    •    Use within 6 months for best flavor

I keep this one on the front shelf — it’s used often.

I had lost my recipe for Beef gravy and this came into my inbox, so I tried…like…..when I was on a soft diet, I would take a can of roast beef I purchased at Sam’s, drain it and add to a pan of beef gravy and put over mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles. Wonderful taste!!!!
